Color scrimshaw on ancient mammoth ivory by M. Stothart. No doubt about who is in control here. Stothart's wildlife pieces always depict both strength combined with gentleness and not a little bit of humor. Not very easy to accomplish this, but he pulls it off brilliantly with this touching piece. Beautiful ebony stand with abalone and mammoth ivory inlay by Fredericks completes the picture.
