Dry point engraving by J. D. Mayhew. J.D. created this striking etching in 1985, long before it became fashionable to sport tattoos. Intriguing composition. One has to really study the etching to discern where the tattoos end and the woman’s shawl begins. This is done of handmade paper with bits and pieces of flower petals embedded into the paper’s surface. It should be “floated” when it is framed. Only a few of J.D.’s etchings were printed on handmade paper, making this even more collectible.

Scrimshaw Gallery featured J.D.’s work for over three decades. J.D. passed away in 2004 and we have just a few of his prized etchings still available. If you ever had the opportunity to see or own a Mayhew, you realize just how special his work was. This is something a collector will want to keep in the family and pass down to other family members.
