New York: Lower Bay, c.1865 (End Paper Drawing)

$200.00

This view looking towards lower Manhattan shows Trinity Church, Broadway, in the center with the Hudson River to the left. The East River (before the Brooklyn Bridge was built) and the fort, Castle Williams on Governors Island are to the right. An early side-wheel walking-beam tugboat tows two vessels into port at the left, as a brig heads towards the narrows and out to sea. It was vessels such as the latter that opened up trading routes to China, the Far East and the West Coast of Africa at the beginning of the nineteenth century and paved the way for the vast expansion in commerce that would follow.
