The Inner Harbour of Whitby, England, c.1880 (End Paper Drawing)

$150.00

The charm of Whitby, Yorkshire, on England’s rugged northeast coast lies in its antiquity. Although its shoreline along the River Esk is graced with examples of fine Victorian architecture, its history goes back well over a thousand years. The limitless scope of this hallowed record, together with a recent visit to make the exciting discovery that things have barely changed since the mid nineteenth century inspired this drawing. It is hoped that Whitby will become the subject of a future painting, most probably by moonlight, showing ships at rest in the inner harbor at low tide.

Whitby Abbey, to the right, was built from the 12th to the 15th centuries on the site of a Saxon Monastery founded by King Oswy of Northumberland in 658, which was subsequently destroyed by the Vikings. St. Mary’s Church atop East Cliff, center, and was the inspiration behind the novel “Dracula” which centered upon the happenings around this church and its adjacent cemetery.
