H.M.S. Surprise, On the Far Side of the World

This is the limited edition lithograph by Geoff Hunt that was done in conjunction with the release of the movie adapted from Patrick O’Brian’s famous maritime series. The H.M.S. Surprise was originally captured from the French on 20th April, 1796. The Surprise was a frigate of 579 tons, 126 ft. on the lower deck and classed as a Fifth Rate, twenty-eight gun frigate. She was rearmed with twenty-four 32 pounder carronades as a main armament, with eight 18-pounder carronades on the quarterdeck and a pair of 6-pounder long guns as bow-chasers. Surprise was sold out of naval service in February, 1802.
