U.S.S Ontario leading Decatur’s squadron, 1815. To deter continuing attacks by the notorious Barbary Pirates of Tripoli, The US sent Lieutenant Decatur in command of a 10 vessel squadron. Pictured are the distinguished U.S.S. Ontario, a ship-sloop fitted with 20 32 lb. carronnades, a very powerful short range weapon. Partly obscured by the lateen rigged Xebec is the Guerriere a 44 gun frigate. Continuing to the right is the 36 gun Frigate USS Constellation and the Macedonian, a 38 gun frigate, captured from the English by Decatur in 1812 and lastly the brig USS Epervier, also taken from the English. The squadron went on to capture the Algerian Pirate’s Flagship, bombard Tripoli and then negotiate the cessation of attacks on American shipping in the Mediterranean.
